| Description |
A large number of patients with life-threatening illness are cared for in general hospitals, care homes, psychiatric units and in the community setting and the nurse is often the carer who spends the most time with them. Nurses’ knowledge of palliative care – the way in which they define it and the actions they take based on that knowledge – directly affect the quality of care they provide for the patient and the quality of the patient’s life.
Palliative Care: Learning in Practice is an interactive textbook based on models of open learning, action learning, work-based learning, critical companionship and reflective practice. It has been designed to be used as a flexible learning resource in a variety of situations with local support from colleagues, professional and practice development staff, managers and educators. The chapters have been written in a straightforward, open learning style and include activities, examples, case studies, useful websites, recommended sources of information and references. The text is designed to enable the reader to gain, improve and update their knowledge and skills, and to take on more responsibility for their own learning and development. This book covers the following topics:
• Essential concepts in palliative care
• Assessment
• Anxiety and depression
• Breathlessness
• Fatigue
• Pain
• Quality improvement
Palliative Care is suitable for qualified nurses in any setting that has palliative care patients. This will include registered nurses in hospitals, care homes, hospices and working in the community. The resource is also suitable for care assistants, members of multidisciplinary and multiprofessional teams and pre- and post-registration students taking modules on palliative care. This textbook has been produced in association with the RCN Palliative Nursing Forum.
A Free Facilitator Guide is available to accompany this textbook - see 'Additional Resources' in the menu column.

| Reviews |
‘I like the different texts and layout with a good use of scenarios and exercises, and lots of good assessment tools to help assess need in palliative care. I think the book is easy to read, understand and follow, not just for registered nurses but also for health care assistants.’ (Lecturer, London South Bank University.)
‘An excellent book that is informative. The activities and case studies, etc. are useful for professionals to work through both for revision and to further develop knowledge and skills. The chapters are clear and the sub-headings are helpful. Links to other resources and websites can help students to gain additional information and further enhance their knowledge and skills. The tables and information regarding various models are informative. The introduction, learning outcomes and summary in each chapter are good.’ (Palliative Care Lecturer, St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice.)
‘Well structured with very well-constructed chapters. I like it! I like the activities and particularly the style of giving examples. (Lecturer, University of York.)
‘Excellent resource book for those wanting to learn more in-depth evidence-based practice in aspects of palliative care. Very well organized and leads the reader through each key area with specific guidance on activities and further reading.’ (Macmillan Education Facilitator.)
